The Great West Window
“Transfiguration of Christ”
by
mervyn Napier Waller
The Great West Window was erected to the Glory of God and in thankful remembrance of those who served in WWII and was dedicated by Canon PW Robinson on 25 May, 1952.
Designed by Napier Waller in consultation with Canon Robinson, the innovative colouring of the glass and the production of the window showed Waller’s genius.
The resulting wonderful and very beautiful effect of such a bold colour scheme is best viewed in the late afternoon when the light from the setting sun streams through.
St Mark’s has the largest collection of stained-glass windows by celebrated artist Napier Waller, that exists outside the Australian War Memorial.
We also have a collection of beautiful stained-glass windows by his wife, Christian Waller, which display her particular style and use of exquisite colour combinations.
Examples of stained-glass windows by D Taylor Kellock, John L E Orval and Sir Ninian Comper can be viewed in the former Baptistry and the Warriors Chapel of St George.
In addition, there is a striking collection of cathedral-glass windows by Joseph Sansfield that is situated in the Clerestory, allowing shafts of yellow light to fill the church on sunlit days.
